Answer: Today the amendment is used to provide the basic rights of people. It is an important amendment that established new ideas because of the people's rights to speech, religion, press, peaceful assembly and petition. People had there freedoms to say things they wanted and believe in what they wanted. The law was created in the first place to protect the citizen's unalienable rights. This means that it was the basic rights of the people and the start of the bill of rights. - F

The courts have interpreted the meaning of free speech in a manner that allows government to regulate and limit free speech in a variety of ways. If someone makes a racist statement, it is freedom of speech only because they are entitled to that opinion and they can say what they are believing in.
