focus question:
1. What issues promoted the creation of your amendment? (CH)

Many issues prompted the creation of the 14th amendment at the time. The big outlining problems was that when slaves gave birth to children, the children were considered foreigners even though they where born on american soil. Representitves wanted to help slaves and their children and this was a step in the right direction. With this new law in place, anyone born on american land was a citizen. This help thousands at the time and can still help people today.

2. what impact did your amendment he on society at that time? (CH)

At the time the 14th amendment affected society in a huge way. The amendment stated that if you are born on american soil you earn your US citizenship. this helped african slaves because that gave their children rights and freedom that they would sadly never have. This motivated forgeiners to travel to America to birth their children so that their children would be citizens. This also resulted in the smuggling of pregnant woman across the border to give birth, that later resulted in many problems spawning for that. This amendment ultimately had a positive effect on society and even the world.

Q- Which of congress proposed this amendment?
A- Senator Jacob Howard of Michigan.

Q- If the state broke the amendment what would the punishment be?
A- The punishment would be that you get in trouble by the authority and/or you have to pay a fee.

Q- How did the southerners reacts to this amendment?
A-Almost all of the southerners did not like the idea of this amendment and wanted it vetoed.

Q- If you were born out of the united states what would you have to do to become a us citizen?
A- You have to be at least 18 years old, you have to be a permanent resident of the US for at least 5 years (3 if you are married to a US citizen), you will have to be interviewed by USCIS (United states citizenship and immigration services)

Q- If you are born on the border of the US and another country would you be considered a US citizen.
A- They will have a dual citizenship until they are 18 when they get to chose.

Q-What were foreigners reactions to the 14th amendment?
A-The foreigners think it is not fair that they cannot be citizens if they are not born in the US.

Q-How does the 14th amendment affect the southern states?
A- Bad: it gave slaves more rights to freedom and citizenship, the slave population decreased by a huge amount Good: Increased the citizen population

Q-Who does the 14th amendment benefit?
A-The 14th amendment helped former slaves.

The 14th amendment was something that helped people but mostly the slaves. This amendment states that all the persons born in the US are considered US citizens. No other people can be considered a US citizen without going through a whole process. About three fourths of the states did not like the idea of the 14th amendment. Almost all of the southern states were the states that did not like the idea of the 14th amendment because they will lose slaves.
