3. (Q) What was was the presidents reaction when the 12th amendment was created?

7. (Q) Where did the idea from the 12th amendment come from?

9. (Q) What was the main reason the 12th amendment was written?
(A) The main reason the 12th amendment was written was because the difficult election of 1800 showed everybody that the Constitution had a problem in electing presidents. The only way to fix the Constitution was for a new amendment that would change the Constitution.

Most of the states approved of the amendment. Thirteen of Seventeen states agreed to this amendment and it was ratified in September in 1804.

What issues prompted the creation of the 12th amendment? (JC)

There were multiple issues that led to the creation of the 12th amendment. The first issue was that when a person wanted to become a president he ran by himself without a running mate and the vice president was elected by the person with the second most votes. This meant that it was possible to have a president and a vice president from different political parties. Another issue is that in the election of 1796 John Adams and Thomas Jefferson became president and vice president even though they were from different political parties. This made it difficult because John Adams and Thomas Jefferson didn't agree on many issues, with John Adams from Massachusetts in the North and Thomas Jefferson from Virginia in the South. The final issue was that in the election of 1800 the electoral college couldn't decide on the president and vice president. This created a deadlock which resulted in a total of 36 ballots to resolve and elect Thomas Jefferson as president. In conclusion the constitution was flawed and it led to two elections with major problems requiring the 12th amendment to fix these problems. (JC)

What impact did the 12th amendment have on society at that time? (KF)

The 12th amendment had a huge impact on society at the time it was created. Without it the president and the vice president would have a rivalry between each other. This is because when elections took place the candidate with the most votes became the president while the runner up became the vice president. The vice president would be angry at the president because the vice president wanted the presidents job. With the 12th amendment today with the president and the vice president don't have such a rivalry. At the time when the 12th amendment was created society was impacted in both negative and positive ways. For example the United States thought the 12th amendment was a much friendlier procedure. The president was able to choose the vice president which created no rivalry between them, unlike before the 12th amendment when the vice president was always furious with the president because he wanted to become the president. Although on the other hand, politicians started to get involved and formed politic parties which created a rivalry between the parties. All in all the 12th amendment had a huge impact on society at that time. (KF)
