An eighth grade boy from West Virginia stood up for his right to wear to school a t-shirt in support of a cause he believes in and got into trouble. Jared Marcum wore an NRA t-shirt that featured a hunting rifle with the words "protect your right". A school secretary felt the shirt violated the school dress code. Two teachers agreed with the secretary and escorted the boy to the principal's office. Things escalated when the police were called. Jared tried to defend his position and the police felt he was out of line and charged him with obstructing an officer. I believe that this matter should not have involved the police. If a school secretary and teachers did not like what was on the boy's shirt, it should have been handled by the principal and the student's parents. I can understand Jared feeling he was being outnumbered and wanted to defend his position. As it turned out the shirt did not violate the school's dress code, so nothing should be on Jared's record.
The message on Jared's t-shirt was not one that advocated violence. It merely defended the right to own a hunting rifle. Jared should have been protected under the 1st Amendment, ensuring him of the right to voice his opinion. If the school secretary and some teachers felt differently, the situation should have been handled better. A conversation with the principal along with Jared's parents should have taken place. Calling the police was a direct violation of Jared's rights. Jared was only 14 at the time, he was a minor. His parents should have been there with him to help.
