This is the book that made me a READER. After Bridge to Terabithia, before Sabriel, way before Harry Potter and The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, Howl's Moving Castle captivated me like no other. Sophie works in her family's hat shop, creating uniquely gorgeous hats when one afternoon she is cursed by a wicked witch and thus begins her amazing adventure with a fire demon, a wizard who eats the hearts of young girls, a benevolent scarecrow and the moving castle.
Who doesn't love castles? Add in all the other magical elements from Diana Wynne Jones--the door that opens up to four different worlds, the way it floats/moves/crawls from place to place, the fire demon Calcifer who keeps it all going and there's a CASTLE that I have thought about for years. When Miyazaki masterminded the animated film incarnation I gobbled it up. If you're looking for a good read, try it!
