Amendment 2 gives you the right to bear arms. This amendment states that you have the right to own a gun or weapon. This amendment came into effect in 1791 with the other nine amendments in the Bill of Rights. Sir George Tucker was the theorist of Amendment 2. On November 27th 2008. The people of Chicago want to ignore the 2nd amendment. They want to ignore this amendment because people in Chicago had died last year from gun murders. More then 400 had been killed because of gun shots. So the people of Chicago had a fight with Washington to ban the second amendment from their city. Another reason is that the city of Chicago also said they did not use guns for awhile because they thought they baned them before Washington found out. Since they did not use guns they had many murders other then gun shots. Therefore Chicago and Washington are still in the process of trying to find a way so that both sides will be happy.
Plaxico Burress ShootingCBSports.com By: Phil On December 1, New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress " accidentally" shot himself in the thigh while at a nightclub in Manhattan New York. Not only is one of the Giants big stars in trouble with the law. Giants starting middle linebacker and one of three captains Antonio Pierce is also being questioned because Pierce is accused of trying to hide the gun that Burress shot himself with in New Jersey. Burress's lawyer Benjamin Brafman said that Burress plans to plead not guilty. Burress injury was treated at New York- Presbyterian Hospital/ Weill Cornell Medical Center. That Saturday was released from the hospital. The NYPD says that Antonio Peirce, Plaxico Burress, and Derrick Ward ( New York Giants running back) entered the Latin Quater with two other people which names were not mentioned in the article at about 11:30 pm. Burress's gun was a .40 caliber Glock which was recovered in the glove compartment of Antonio Peirce's Cadillac Escilade. As of today, Derrick Ward and Antonio Peirce were not suspended for any games. On the other hand, Burress was.
In June, 2008, the case, "D.C vs. Heller" was decided. Heller was a security guard that took his gun home from work. The District of Columbia did not like that. When he was taken to court, the judges eventually ruled that he was allowed to take and keep his gun at home, and would not get in trouble because his right was protected by the second amendment. Previously, for over 70 years, the courts had ruled that the second amendment only protected a state's right to create militias. The Heller case changed that. But as a result of the Heller decision every criminal felt that he or she that was convicted with a gun crime should not be denied the right to carry a firearm. However, the Supreme Court wrote in their decision that, "nothing in our opinion should be taken to cast doubt on longstanding prohibitions on the possession of firearms by felons and the mentally ill, or laws forbidding the carrying of firearms in sensitive places such as schools and government buildings, or laws imposing conditions on the commercial sale of arms." This meant that people who are mentally ill or have gone to jail for the possession of a gun cannot carry a gun. It also means that you cannot walk into a government building or a school with a gun in your position. These actions would NOT be protected by the second amendment. Since Heller was not ill in any way, or was taking his gun to a school or government building, he was not put into jail because of the second amendment.
