welcome to amendment 14

Essential Question: How did the issues which prompted the creation of the amendment compare with the issues they are applied to today?
Amendment_14.jpg
The 14th amendment was proposed June 13, 1866 and ratified, or accepted July 9, 1968. The 14th amendment covers 5 major topics: citizenship of the United States, representatives, rules for being in office, public dept(the total debt of the nation), and power of the Congress to edit the 14th amendment. The amendment is very important today because it protects the rights of citizens, and in these times of illegal immigration our country really needs an amendment like this.

What events led to the creation of the amendment?
the civil war, slavery, and women having no rights led to the creation of the 14th amendment.

What main rights are protected by the 14th amendment?
The main rights protected are:

  • states must provide equal protection to all people
  • citizenship- if you were born or naturalized in the United States, you would automatically be a citizen

Who proposed the 14th amendment?
The 14th amendment was proposed by Congress.

What problems may occur if a citizen of the U.S. has two illegal immigrants as parents?

  • as illegal citizens, the parents will most likely not be able to apply a working visa, so they cannot support the child financially
  • the parents would be illegible for public assistance(they can not get money or goods granted to their family based on income)
  • parents can be separated from their child, even at 9 months old
  • many parents are deported(the forced transport of people outside the area where they live)

What would happen if the 14th amendment didnt exist?

If the 14th amendment didn't exist, there might still have been slavery. Also, women wouldn't have as many rights as they do today. People wouldn't be equally protected by the law if this amendment wasn't created.

Current Events:

"Immigration Officials Unveil Redesigned U.S. Citizenship Test" (September 28, 2007)
This atircle was mainly about how United States officials modified the test to become a U.S. citizen. The test is to be taken by any illegal alien wanting to become a citizen. The list of questions on the test was narrowed down to the most important ones. Some of the questions now have additional answers that are correct besides those that were already put into the test. Research says that 92% of 6,777 people who applied to voulenteer to take the test passed.
This says that people are beginnin to know their facts that are on the test. Also, that means the test has become easir than before for some people. This article is very interesting and gives people an idea about the changes made to the test.

`This article is about illegal immigrants coming to our country and being sent to jail. These people have come here from other countries who have terrible governments. These people are going against the 14th amendment. The immigrants who have not taken the citizenship test were legally no supposed to be here. Those people were locked up immediately. The 14th amendment protects the right of citizenship, so if the immigrants who come here haven't taken the test they are crossing the 14th amendment which is why the are immediately sent to jail with a very slight chance to be let free by court.

Article: We're Borrowing Like Mad; Can the U.S. Pay It Back?
This article hits one issue that currently affects all of us in some way: the total debt of the nation. The prediction for the future of America's debt is that by the year 2010, the debt will be 60% of our GDP, which is the total amount of work or labor, such as the manufacturing of goods of the whole nation. One option we have is this: in a pinch, we can print all the money we owe. The problem is that this will cause inflation, which is when the value of money decreases. Our soon to be President, Barack Obama, wants to focus on decreasing the amount of public debt we owe once he takes his term. So far, we do not yet have a definite solution to our problem. This article relates to the 14th amendment because it states that by whoever commits treason to our country, the total debt of the nation will increase. This still applies to the present because currently, if there is rebellion against the gov.t, the public debt of America will increase and there will be no objection to this.
