What issues prompted the creation of your amendment?

Some issues that prompted the creation of the 25th Amendment was that before it, no one knew what to do if the president or vice president got sick, were impeached, died, or resigned from office. This was a problem, because there would be no one to run the country or be president or vice president if something were to happen to them. Another problem that created the 25th Amendment was who would fill in for the vice president if something were to happen to him. However, the 25th Amendment showed us that the president will nominate a new vice president if something were to happen to him. Also, if something were to only happen to the vice president, then the president will nominate a new one for as long as needed. No vice president was a problem, because without a vice president, there would be no one to fill in for the president. Lastly, the president makes pro tempores because of the 25th Amendment. Therefore, these are the problems that prompted the creation of the 25th Amendment.

What impact did your amendment have on society at that time?

Before the 25th Amendment was written in 1967 there was nothing in writing about what happens when the president, vice president, or both resigns from office, gets sick or dies. With this in effect it inflicted society. The country then decided to make the great 25th Amendment! Now if anything happens to the president, vice president, or both there is a plan put in place! With this amendment put in place, it also brings in the Legislative and Judicial Branch. This amendment also includes, obviously a huge part of the Executive Branch. So far this amendment is running smoothly throughout the country! The most important effect of this amendment is now society is comfortable and not high strung if any of those situations I just listed happened!

Content Of The Article:

President Bush was diagnosed with polyps in his colon which could be cancerous. Bush’s doctor thought it would be a great idea for Bush to have a colonoscopy. At this time Dick Cheney was Vice President. While Bush was under Propofol, Cheney became President. George Bush was sedated for 31 minutes in total. Propofol is known to make you less groggy and it gets out of your system quicker. When Bush woke up from the colonoscopy he immediately resumed to be president. President Bush got 5 small growths removed from his colon. As of 2002 Bush has no polyps in his colon which means his colon is cancer free.

Why the Amendment is still relevant today:

If the 25th Amendment never existed President Bush would have still been president in those 31 minutes he was knocked out. Anything can happen in 31 minutes and if the President was not aware of what went on things can get severe. For example if someone bombs the U.S capital who will declare what to do. Thankfully, Cheney was successful for those 31 minutes Bush was gone. There is always backup just in case the President gets ill or passes away. Since Dick Cheney was Vice President he was able to move up the line of succession to president. The top of the line is the President. The 25th Amendment will be used forever and always. Presidents are humans they get ill and pass away like we do and if that happens the same time as they are serving as president the vice president will become the president and everyone will move up the line of succession.

This CNN article explains the succession of presidential and vice presidential circumstances. When the president god forbid gets sick or passes away, people think who will take over as president. The answer is the vice president would take over as president for that amount of time that the president is ill. If the vice president gets ill or passes away, the president has the right to nominate someone for vice president. There is a Cabinet line of succession which includes
Secretary of State , Secretary of the Treasury , Secretary of Defense , Attorney General ,Secretary of the Interior ,Secretary of Agriculture ,Secretary of Commerce ,Secretary of Labor , Secretary of Health and Human Services ,Secretary of Housing and Urban Development ,Secretary of Transportation ,Secretary of Energy ,Secretary of Education , Secretary of **Veterans Affairs**, Secretary of Homeland Security. There is always backup just in case a member of the Cabinet gets ill. For example on July 13, 1985 President Ronald Reagan had to have surgery. During the time he was under anesthesia Vice President, George H.W Bush was considered president. There have been several instances where someone in the line of succession has passed away, become ill or resigned and thanks to the 25th Amendment, U.S citizens do not have to worry who is protecting our country. The United States of America is always watched over and is protected and that is because the 25th Amendment.

Relevant Today:
In general, the people in the Cabinet are humans and all humans get sick, resign or pass away. There has been a Cabinet Line of Succession for plenty of years and there always seems to be a time they come in handy. The 25th Amendment is still used in The United States right now. Anything can happen in a second and you always need someone to watch over you, such as the President. During, President Bush’s presidency he had to have a colonoscopy. At this time Dick Cheney was Vice President so he moved up the Line of Succession. After George H.W Bush was out of the Colonoscopy he resumed to be President. Since, Bush became president again that caused Dick Cheney to move down the Line of Succession which meant Dick Cheney was now Vice President. The 25th Amendment has made everything go smooth and thanks to the 25th Amendment the U.S.A is always protected and comforted to know that someone is watching over them.

Content of Article:

The twenty-fifth amendment is the solution to when the president dies, resigns, is disabled, or is removed from office, because it allows there to be a whole line of succession to take their place. The designated survivor; Jeh Johnson's duty is to maintain the ongoing government. Only cabinet members who are able to succeed in the presidency are selected as the designated survivors. In case of a national emergency including the president, the vice president, or other leaders of the in the line of succession to the presidency, the designated survivors are always called for help ahead of the State of the Union. Keeping the tradition, Johnson has been kept in an undisclosed location, and will remain there until the president returns to the white house. Anthony Foxx was the designated survivor for the U.S last year. Senator; Orrin Hatch (another designated survivor) is third in the line of succession. Without the 25th amendment, there would be no line of succession or designated survivors.

Relevance Today:

The 25th amendment is definitely still relevant today. It is still relevant, because without it, chaos would be happening in the U.S each time something happened to the president or vice president. We would not know what to do each time something happened to one of them, and our government would fall. There would be no line of succession and no breaks for the president. If the president knows they're the only option, then they might fall under pressure, get overwhelmed, or be so busy focusing on their health, that they would lose focus on their duty as the president of the U.S. The government may be so focused on keeping the president safe and healthy, that they may not be able to focus on their duties as well. Maintaining the government and keeping everyone on task would be almost impossible if we were all constantly worried about the president and what would happen if something were to happen to them. Therefore, the 25th amendment is still relevant today, because we still come across issues involving replacing presidents or vice presidents today.

Content of Article:

This article describes that while George W. Bush was president, Dick Cheney became president for two hours and fifteen minutes in 2002. Bush underwent a routine controversy while he was filled in for. Cheney became the temporary president without controversy or disagreements from the Supreme Court. The only other time the 25th amendment was used, was when President Bush filled in while President Ronald Reagan had colon surgery. While Cheney was subbing, he was running many staff meetings, but many thought that he was being a prankster, and was toying around with his job. This article shows that the president was only unconscious for twenty minutes, and suggests that we should just have someone fill in for the president while he's sleeping at night too. Therefore, this article shows how the 25th amendment was used, and suggests how it should be used.

Relevance Today:

The twenty fifth amendment is absolutely relevant today. It's relevant, because there are still occurring situations about presidents or vice presidents needing a replacement today. For example, Reagan needed Bush to fill in while he had colon surgery, and Bush needed Cheney to fill in while he underwent a routine controversy. At any point of a president's life, something could happen so it's important to have many other options of professionals to fill in for however long they need to as the president. If there are no other options, then the U.S would fall apart without a president. Even though two hours and fifteen minutes sounds like an unreasonable amount of time to replace a president for, you don't know what could have happened in those two hours and fifteen minutes without a conscious president. There most likely will be future situations that cause us to invoke the 25th amendment once again. Therefore, the 25th amendment is relevant today, because we need a whole line of succession to take the president's place if something were to happen to the president or vice president.
